Androcles and the Lion   [copy]

Written for the children of Bilton Grange School in Warwickshire, this musical play lasts about an hour and is suitable for KS2 pupils. It includes chorus numbers, as well as speaking parts which are suitble for boys or girls. Androcles is a Roman slave who dreams of freedom. When he finally plucks up courage to make his escape from his cruel masters, and goes to live with the animals of the forest, it is only a matter of time before he will be captured again. Only one fate befalls runaway slaves: being thrown to the lions in the Roman arena...

This unison cantata lasts about 20 minutes and the 7 songs are suitable for upper KS2 pupils to adult! The legend of St. George and the Dragon is told in a humorous and imaginative way. Lunchtime [copy]  John Goodrum

The plot concerns the evil Mr. Cropper who cancels lunchtimes and insists that lessons continue. The heroes, Rebecca and Martin, help return the school to normal. Lasting 22 minutes this work was written for Lower Secondary pupils. The lyrics can be photocopied. This cantata contains a variety of musical styles including an exciting patter song in which two teams compete. Great Fun!

Joseph's Story [copy]  Susan Ashworth

The Nativity story is told from Joseph's point of view. The short songs are simple in style and staging suggestions are given. The piano texture has been kept to a minimum and a tape of the accompaniment is available. The songs are linked by a part for a narrator and they are suitable for infants and lower primary.

A Maidwell Meditation [copy]  Colin Ashworth

Another attractive piece for almost any 'C' instrument (a viola part could be supplied) which consists of a melody supported by piano chords.  Written originally as an organ piece which can be heard HERE

Bicycle Suite [copy]  Colin Ashworth

These three pieces, for 4 clarinets and 1 Bass Clarinet, are loosely connected by the theme of cycling. They can be played separately.  'Bumpy Road' presents rhythmic challenges whilst 'Oily Rag' demands little from the listeners, although the players need to concentrate on precision and balance.  You will either like the meditative central 'Alwalton', or not!

Miniature Preludes  Nicholas Burt

Three short clarinet pieces - Allegro gioioso' (in 7/8, 6/8 and 5/8); Andante Tranquillo (5/4); Alla Hornpipe (3/4 and 6/8).  Not too difficult for a confident player.

Siciliano [copy]  Colin Ashworth

This flute and piano work has a restful yet lilting melody. It is an obvious pastiche of the Baroque siciliano style and an excellent piece with which to explain the Neapolitan chord! Janice Scott has used this piece on her Easter tape of Prayers, Sermons and Stories.

Sonata Minimalis  Nicholas Burt

This is in three movements and is scored for flute and piano. The composer says, "it's on the tricky side of average, but no grade 7-8 candidate is likely to be unduly fazed by it".

Tricky Trios [copy]  Colin Ashworth

'Faltering Fours', 'Fickle Fives' & 'Syncopated Sixes' began life as Flute Trios. However, they can be played by other instrumental combinations (e.g. 1st Flute and 2nd & 3rd Clarinets), and parts can be produced on request. The flute set, for example, comprises a full score and set of parts including one for an optional Alto Flute which may replace the 3rd flute. Individually, or as a set, they are suitable for festivals and competitions and the number of players need not be limited to 3! The pieces last 2 to 3 minutes each and require competent Grade 4-6 players. Each piece can be supplied separately.
